MSI GE78HX Raider Gaming Laptop Design
The all-new MSI GE78HX Raider is an amazing gaming laptop with great gaming-like aesthetics, and it embraces the true identity of a Gaming Laptop. Raiders in the last generation laptops didn’t have the looks and flare the new 2023 models have right now. It looks more like the MSI Titan’s smaller brother with a full black aluminium lid and an RGB Dragon Sheild at the back.
The laptop comes in a full black design and features its signature Lightbar on the front of the laptop. It looks amazing and is filled with RGB square bulbs, giving a retro feeling to the laptop. The 17-inch laptop comes with minimal bezels on all sides. It is a great laptop, and it is extremely durable and weighs around 3.1kgs but is compact enough to fit inside your Laptop backpack.
MSI Raider 2023 GE78HX Display
The all-new Raider GE78HX Gaming Laptop features a 2560×1600 Resolution with a refresh rate of 240Hz. The all-new redesigned model features a 16:10 aspect ratio display, giving you more space for productivity and gaming. The inbuilt RTX 4080 is perfect for pushing the extra performance to fit the new resolution displays.
We tested the display quality of the Raider GE78HX, and the quality of the panel blew us away. The MSI GE78HX Raider features a 163% DCI-P3 Color Gamut with 115.4% sRGB. These types of displays, along with the fast 240Hz refresh Rate, make this laptop a great companion for both Gaming and Content Creation. This laptop also features brightness up to 412nits.
MSI GE78HX Raider Keyboard and Trackpad
Although this time, the Raider didn’t go for the mechanical keyboard you would normally find on a Titan; instead, it went for a full-size keyboard and a number pad. This keyboard has a built-in macro. With the new design, MSI highlighted the WASD keys so that it becomes more visible. You can use those keys to play, pause media, or change the fan speeds. The large translucent arrows are cool and can be a handy addition, especially when gaming.
The keys on the keyboard have linear key travel, and the only issue is that it has a 5.1 x 3.2-inch touchpad which is quite large, and it responds well to all the Windows Gestures. The giant touchpad has the advantage of having extra room; it feels solid when you click it.
GE78HX Gaming Laptop – Ports and Connectivity
On the left side of the laptop, you will find a Thunderbolt 4 Port, SD Card Slot and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
On the right side of the laptop, it comes with two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type A Ports and one single USB 3.2 Gen2 Type C Port.
You will find an Ethernet Port, HDMI 2.1 and one more USB Type C Port at the back of the laptop. The Power jack is also at the back of the MSI GE78 HX Laptop. On the Wireless side, this laptop features the Killer Wi-Fi 6E AX1690i paired with Bluetooth v5.3.

Audio
The audio on the MSI GE78HX Gaming Laptop is amazing. It is really loud, and the top two speakers and four woofers did justice to all the various types of music I have listened to.
The audio was clear when gaming and you could distinguish between faraway gunfire, and the ingame audio was perfect. The speakers on the GE78 HX are amazing, and the preinstalled Nahimic Software has profiles built in for music, movie, gaming etc. Trust us, it sounds amazing out of the box, so leave all the sound settings as it is.
Webcam
The MSI Raider GE78HX features a 1080p Webcam and a privacy shutter you normally don’t find on Gaming Laptops.
The camera works well, and because it is an IR Webcam, it will help you log in to Windows using Facial Recognition. The FR works well and logs me in within a second. The quality of the webcam is excellent, and it is great for video calls and conferencing. Since it is a gaming laptop, this webcam can also be used for streaming.
Battery
As expected, MSI’s 99Whr was not a long-lasting battery when we tested it out, and it had life for around two and half hours while browsing the web, streaming videos with brightness set to 150nits. It is better to plug the laptop into an external power source using the included laptop charger for gaming.

GE78 Raider Thermals and Noise
The MSI GE78 Raider HX Gaming Laptop features a dual-fan cooling system. MSI is always known to have the best cooling solutions for Gaming Laptops. The Coolerboost 5 Thermal Solution features a CPU and GPU Shared Pipe design with a total of 6 heat pipes to prevent thermal throttling of any sort.
We tested the temperatures on this laptop using a thermal gun and found that it is around 38 degrees at the centre of the keyboard, while the area around the touchpad was cooler at around 27 degrees Celsius. However, using a separate keyboard and mouse when gaming is advisable.
The hottest point, on the other hand, is the bottom of the laptop, where it measured around 45 degrees. To be honest, the temps are pretty much okay, and it is pretty normal for a machine of this calibre.
