Lenovo Yoga Laptop Slim 7 – Ryzen 7 Laptop Review

Lenovo manufactures one of the best lightweight laptops without carrying a huge price premium & Lenovo Yoga Laptop is no less. It not only provides the best value for money but also is one of the most powerful Ultrabooks in the market for under Rs.78000.

This is by far one of the best integration of the Ryzen 4000 series chips in the notebook department without sacrificing quality of the build, display, keyboard, speakers etc. But at the same time you cant compare this laptop with another high end laptops which is double priced. The point of this laptop is the price point and the value that it offers.

So we will be taking a look today at the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 14ARE05 Laptop.

Build Quality

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 is fully made out of metal. However it is slightly slimmer and weighs less than the Ideapad 7. The laptop is put together really well with little to no flex whatsoever. The laptop feels solid and doesn’t have any noises or creaks when using or travelling.

The design is robust and clean with no fancy settings and buttons. Since the unit is dark grey in color it hides the smudges and fingerprints perfectly.
It weighs around 1.1KG while being only 14.9mm thin.

Display

The Display is a Full HD 1080p IPS Panel. Lenovo uses a very high quality display panel with brightness of up to 400nits. Its color accurate with 100% sRGB which is great for professional graphic designers and content creators.

However, the display has an antiglare finish and you will not be able to see any reflections or glares in brighter conditions.

The thin narrow bezels compliments the wide-view experience while using the laptop. Although this is a 60Hz Display, inclusion of AMD Freesync will help reducing the tearing and lag while gaming.

The display panel can rotate up to 180 degrees thus also minimizing the risk of hinge damage!

Camera

The key highlight of this laptop is the super sensitive IR Camera. This laptop comes with the efficient Windows Hello sign in options. One of our favorite features is the AI Camera which seamlessly captures the activity you are doing and take actions for example, we are watching a movie or listening to music, and if you get up and walk away from the screen. The movie or the music will automatically pause and will resume when you come back.

Some users may feel insecure as the camera is always turned on. In order to counter this, Lenovo included the privacy shutter. You can close or open the shutter whenever you want to. It serves the maximum level of security as the shutter blocks the webcam completely.

Trackpad and Keyboard

Trackpad

The trackpad is of an average size pad made out of plastic. The plastic trackpad tracks really well with all the Windows gesture features. The buttons are placed below the trackpad with no dedicated buttons for left and right-click. It rattles a little bit but not much of a concern.

Keyboard

The Keyboard is good enough but the spaces between each keys is very less which might be a problem for user who types really fast. It might feel mushier to some. There aren’t any special features of this keyboard. The keyboard is white backlit and you can use the laptop in any lighting conditions.

Speakers

A set of two speakers are there on either side of the laptop keyboard that is covered with grills. The bass and treble response is excellent. The audio experience is top-notch, thanks to the Dolby Atmos speaker system. The audio is loud and very clear.

Connectivity

On the Connectivity side of things, we have the current Gen Wifi6 with an Intel AX200. Transfer rates and pairing is smooth, thanks to the Bluetooth 5.0.

On the right side of the laptop we have two USB 3.1 Ports, one Power on off button and a memory card reader. On the right we get to see one USB Type C connector, one USB 3.1 and another Type C Connector with Charging facility. This laptop supports Type C USB charging.

Battery Life

We have tested the battery life using the different scenarios and it did hold up pretty good. This laptop boasts a 60.7W/hr battery which pretty decent when compared to other 14 inch laptops. These are some of the results when using the laptop at 70% brightness.
Google Drive/WIFI/Screen On – 8Hours
Youtube/Quiet Mode/WIFI – 15Hours
Netflix/Screen On/Wifi – 14Hours
Browsing/Quiet Mode/Wifi- 9 Hours

Quick Charge mode is also present on this laptop so you can charge a good amount of battery in a short period of time. Normally it takes 2 hours for a full charge.

Performance

Coming to the performance, this laptop is powered by the mighty Ryzen 7 4800U which is an 8 core 16 Thread CPU. Pairing it with the AMD Radeon 8 Graphics which runs at 1.75Ghz. The 8GB RAM is soldered and cannot be upgraded but the RAM runs at a frequency of 4266Mhz.

We ran some tests and here are the results
3D Mark FireStrike – 3565
AIDA64 Memory Test – Write 42137Mb/s & Read 46326Mb/s
Passmark Rating – 4810

Thermals

The AMD APU runs hot in some of our testing scenarios. It does hit around 80-90 degrees on full load. The presence of the dual cooling setup does help in minimizing the cooling but the APU runs really hot under full load. But the CPU never throttles or lowers it performance. Maybe the peak temperatures are high but the thermal solution prevents the APU from overheating.

Software

On the software side of things, the Lenovo Vantage is available which helps to update the drivers, check for errors, and request support. This is a screenshot. The original software looks the same as this!

Conclusion

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i laptop is one of the best performing and lightweight laptops in the market. The Ryzen 7 4800U makes all the difference. Comes in a full metal build quality with the Yoga Slim 7i engraved on the side of the protruding bezel. Aesthetic-wise, performance-wise and productivity-wise this laptop is hard to beat!

  1. Hello! You mentioned the privacy camera shutter. How does it work? Obviously there is no simple mechanical cover implemented… Is there any HW solution?
